Living the Christian life is an adventure
as my grandfather “Pap” Dillon, at sixteen years of age, left a safe home in Indiana and went to the Dakota territory with a Civil war General to make his way in Land ruled by the Sioux Indian. No written direction , a few old maps and witnesses of a life of fulfillment and adventure that called him on. But he made a successful life as a rancher with his wife and children and fulfilled his dream. Believers, the Christian life is not by the letter, it is by the Spirit. He is not only with you; He is in you. And your life with Christ is an adventure that only you can experience.
The apostle Paul tells us, “Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life” (2 Cor.3:6). “Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster” (Gal. 3:24-25).
The great leader of the protestant reformation, Martin Luther, compares the letter of the law to the donkey on which Abraham rides to go to the mountain with his son Isaac to worship. When they reached the mountain they went up to worship and left the donkey behind, “And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship and come again unto you” (Gen. 22:5).
The letter of the law has its place. It shows us how to get along on earth and shows our need of a savior; in that to absolutely keep it is beyond our ability. But as between us and our God it is crucified and we are “accepted in the beloved” (Christ).
