Who is Jesus?
Simon Peter’s answer, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matt. 16:16). The first man Adam is also called the son of God (Luke 3:38); both Jesus and Adam came directly from God , but there the comparison ends – except by contrasts.
Before the Lord opened my eyes, even as an adult, I thought Jesus was the Son of God because He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. Now I know as the Scripture teaches (John 3: 17), He was and is the Son of God from everlasting, eternal without a beginning and is an eternal extension of the Father but with His own distinct personhood.
Jesus told this to the Jews, who, as we ourselves, were descendants of the first man Adam, “Ye are from beneath; I am from above; ye are of this world; I am not of this world; I said therefore unto, that ye shall die in your sins; for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins (John 8: 23-24). This is important: You will notice, (if you have a King James version of the Bible), that the word “he” after “am” is in italics. This is a help – not in some translations because it means this word is not in the original text but is added by the translator. Jesus said something infinitely beyond. He is saying believe that I AM -the name of Jehovah, meaning God over all. Jesus goes on and says the same thing In John 8:58 saying, ” before Abraham was I am”. Abraham Was the ancestor of the Jews, living some 2000 years earlier. The Jews then took up stones to stone Jesus because they understood Him to be claiming deity, which He was.
The first man Adam has died and is buried. The first man Jesus was later crucified, died, and rose from the dead the third day. Bodily, He ascended into heaven and in God’s appointed time He will return in clouds of glory. He was crucified in a small country and seen by a few. When He returns “every eye will see Him and they also which pierced him…. (Rev.1:7). And we who know Him now shall be with Him then (Jude 14).
