Some of the most meaningful words ever spoken show the grounds for our rest of faith in Christ. In the gospel of Mark, concerning the death of Christ on the cross, we read, “And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.” In the gospel of John, (John 19:30), we find out what Jesus said when He cried with a loud voice; this no doubt for public record and notice to all- believers, doubters, demons, and angels. When He said “it is finished”, He used the word tetelestai translated into our language, “it is finished”.
The word tetelestai had usage in commercial transactions. It had a meaning similar to “paid in full” written on a receipt today. The long overdue debt mankind owed for a violation of God’s law finished- “paid in full”; the work of redemption prophesied, set forth in shadow and prophetic promise finished; the long-awaited promise of the Seed of the woman to bruise the head of the Serpent (Satan) finished; the curse of the law-showing man’s duty but giving no power to do it finished ,”Blotting out the the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers. he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it” (Col. 2:14-15). And Christ did it for the believer “once for all” (Heb.10:10). Praise God forever! Praise Him! Praise Him!
